A Movie Review: War Horse

Disinterested in the mundane boring love stories in cinema? Check out this new release, War Horse!

Directed by the oh-so-famous Steven Spielberg, War Horse is a movie set in 1914, where countries were at conflicts with one another and where wars were frequent.

Its starts off with the Narracott family. The father, Ted Narracott was a man who was proud despite being penniless. During the annual bidding of horses, Ted had his eyes set upon a magnificent-looking horse, which had brown fur and a luscious black mane. He bid against his landlord, offering a total of 30 guineas, knowing fully that he wasn’t financially stable. When he finally acquired the horse, his only son Albert, grew extremely fond of it and trained it to run.

Albert named the horse Joey, and with Joey’s help, he managed to transform his father’s useless strech of stony land into a fertile field. However, tragedy struck when the harvest was futile. Ted had to pay up and the only way was by selling Joey off to the army. The separation was painful to watch, but Albert promised he would find Joey and that they would one day be reunited.

Joey was passed on to various people as the war continued. He landed in the hands of an old french man and his granddaughter who were kind-hearted souls. However, the army came by and took him away when they saw him.

After Albert reached the age of 19, he volunteered himself to the army, and he fought a war against the French bravely. It was there when Joey made an escape and found his way back to Albert.

Brilliantly staged with realistic graphics and props, War Horse will definitely intrigue all the war-enthusiasts. But most importantly, this movie teaches you about bravery, love and trust. It's truly a must-watch!

Rating: 8/10.

Chapter Two: New Years Resolutions and How To Keep Them
By now, most of us are slowing inching away from our new years resolution made only weeks ago. Many people have trouble keeping up with their New Year resolutions once the year starts to become busy. Because of that the same top 5 New Year resolutions pop up every year. Here is a list of 3 of the most common New Year resolutions and how to make sure they last throughout the year.

1)   Lose weight
There are many variations of this: get healthy, work out, lose the bulge. Essentially all that holiday partying ends up as layers of fat sitting on your tummy. And by the time the work year starts, there’s just no more time for all that exercise we promised we would do.

One way to keep this resolution is to watch your food, because you are what you eat. General consensus would dictate that the less active you are the less food you should consumer. Also start taking note of what kinds of food you eat in a day. Awareness is the first step to solving any problem. However, self-starvation and crash-dieting is definitely not the way to go.

Solving any problems starts with taking small steps, literally. Take the stairs on your way to and fro home. While it may not seem like much, results would show once you’re done with this routine by next years new year resolution.

2)   Learn something new

When was the last time you tried something new? Learning a new skill helps you socially and boosts your self esteem. Unfortunately most of us do a quick google search about the new skill we would dream of acquiring and end it with the google search itself

The trick to sticking by your endeavour to learn new things is to do it with others. When you partake an activity with a group of friends or a partner, you tend to be committed for longer. This is because you commit to not only the new skill, but also your friendship. Be there to support each other and learning new things would be more fun.

3) Enjoy life more

This is not a JOKE.  Yes, you’re busy but you need time for yourself too.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and Jane a dull girl. Learn to take in all the beauty in life and enjoy life even when at work.

One way to make sure you get to enjoy life more is to give yourself little rewards for a job well done. Enjoy a good DVD over the weekend or treat yourself to a nice meal because you deserve it for working so hard. This means that you get to do work, and you get to enjoy yourself!

The key to keeping your New Year Resolution is to make time for your yourself. Learning to organise your time well will go a long way!

Chapter One: The Agency

They say to “look with favour upon a bold beginning.” Well, the Singapore Polytechnic Diploma in Media and Communication (SP DMC) course has certainly taken an outstanding step forward this year.

Along with the start of this year, DMC has launched its creative new learning space, The Agency, a student integrated marketing communication agency! Let’s not forget the brilliant partnership DMC has established with the Starcom Mediavest Group, one of the largest brand communication groups in the world.

With such exciting developments taking place right now, it is no wonder DMC has made several media impressions online.

Firstly, AsiaOne, an information portal of the Singapore Press Holdings features an article on how SP has created revolutionary learning spaces such as The Agency for its DMC students!

In addition, online Media magazine “CampaignSingapore” and “Marketing” business magazine, features how our very own SP DMC students will be under the mentorship of the Starcom MediaVest Group.

As a student of the SP DMC course, I feel the pride and burning anticipation at how these new beginnings of my course are taking off so well. With the launch of the new working space, I cannot help but imagine myself making full use of the creative learning space as much as possible, before I leave the school!

It is also heartening to know of how the new DMC students will stand to gain from the impressive changes made by the school.

SP DMC has indeed made a bold beginning this year, I am looking forward to the positive impact such changes will make on DMC as a whole. I like fresh starts, I like such great, new beginnings.
